What do I need to do to access DB2 for z/OS from a distributed (Windows, Unix, AIX, Linux, etc) platform? Reply ( 2 )

Unlike most other database systems, DB2 for z/OS requires an additional licensed product to provide access JDBC and ODBC from distributed systems. IBM markets the product DB2 Connect which has multiple tiers from Personal Edition to Enterprise Edition. DB2 Connect is also included in some tiers of the full DB2 UDB product. There several other vendors which offer connectivity such as HiT and DataDirect (formerly Neon Systems). License costs are typically distributed engine based, but may also be zSeries MSU based.
I have hundreds of distributed systems that need to connect to DB2 for z/OS; what is the best way to handle that? Reply ( 2 )

DB2 Connect Enterprise has gateway capabilities which provide for the concentration of distributed connections. This reduces the number of direct of connections to DB2 on z/OS which in turn reduces session overhead and better utilizes z/OS resources. High availability and load balancing can be achieved by having multiple DB2 Connect Enterprise server concentrators.
